Most of the traffic that reaches a hotel's website leaves without a trace. It comes in, looks at rooms, compares dates, checks cancellation terms and leaves without booking or identifying itself. That behaviour isn't noise: it's information that, today, most hotels are losing.
What is an anonymous visitor
An anonymous visitor is anyone browsing the hotel's website without leaving a piece of data that identifies them: they haven't booked, haven't filled in a form, haven't connected to the WiFi. Technically they exist (there's a session, a journey, a behaviour), but commercially they're invisible. The hotel doesn't know if it's someone who has stayed before, someone comparing with the competition, or someone one click away from booking.
80% of the visits to your hotel's website fall into this category. That traffic has already been paid for — through SEO, through SEM, through brand investment — and most of it is lost without the hotel learning anything from it. Relying on those people to come back on their own, or resigning yourself to them eventually booking through an OTA with the corresponding commission, is not a strategy.
Why this traffic matters
Every anonymous visit the hotel fails to identify is an opportunity that will probably end up being resolved elsewhere: on an OTA, with the commission that implies, or directly with the competition. The problem isn't just losing that one sale. It's losing the chance to build a relationship with that person over time.
This connects directly with the underlying goal of any hotel data strategy: growing direct revenue and reducing dependence on intermediaries. A hotel that doesn't identify its visitors is systematically giving up the part of the funnel where it has the most margin.

This adds another layer to the underlying question: it's not just whether the hotel identifies its anonymous visitor today, but what quality of data it will be competing with tomorrow against these new intermediation channels. A hotel that centralises its data — connectivity, website behaviour, email, WhatsApp or phone interactions — starts from a better position than one that still has its data scattered across systems that don't talk to each other.
